The gut restore plan is an 11 week programme that corrects the imbalance in the gut microbiome through starving the yeast, attacking it through antifungals, and repopulating the gut with healthy probiotics, that keep the other microbes in check!

Weeks 1,2, and 3

No dietary restrictions, but start including certain foods and taking the liver tonic, the liver works in harmony with the pancreas to process toxins through digesting enzymes.

When we start the restriction diet in week 4, the fungi will start to die off. As they die, they will release toxins which may result in skin sensitivity, sweats and headaches. By ensuring the pancreas and liver are in tip top condition, we can maximise their efficacy and reduce any unwanted symptoms.

The pancreas naturally makes digestive enzymes , so start including foods that include these enzymes themselves, as well as supporting pancreatic and liver health.

Start to introduce raw garlic into the diet as it is a pancreatic stimulant, a probiotic and a prebiotic. Throughout the six weeks of restriction diet, we will be taking raw garlic every day as it is also a natural antifungal. During the six week restriction diet, we will be building up to taking 3 cloves a day, but for now start with just one.

To take the garlic: peel, crush, leave for ten minutes and consume immediately after10 minutes. Either wash it down with water like taking a pill ,or put on a cracker or toast. Do not take on an empty stomach.

To take the liver tonic: measure a teaspoon full (5mil), pour on just boiled water, leave to cool to luke-warm (this will evaporate most of the alcohol). Take 30 mins before food 3 times a day.

You may experience some change in bowel habit or headaches when you first start taking this remedy. If these symptoms persist, reduce dose to ½ a teaspoon 3 times a day and consult your naturopathic healthcare professional.

Foods to start including:

  • Lemon,

  • Sprouted seeds, pulses and grains

  • Pineapple

  • Seaweed

  • Bananas

  • Garlic

  • Oatmeal

  • Cherries

  • Broccoli

  • Tofu

  • Mushrooms

  • Cabbage

  • Sweet potatoes

  • Honey

Weeks 4&5

We start a 6 week restrictive diet to starve the fungi, as well as taking anti fungal herbs to target the candida directly. ‘Die off’ will begin after 3-4 days of treatment with potential side effects such as headaches, sweats and skin sensitivity. Symptoms may last up to one week, but usually less. After this phase there will be an increase in vitality and an ongoing reduction in the initial candida symptom, although cravings will probably persist.

See THE RESTORATION DIET for a full list of accepted and prohibited foods.

How to take your anti-fungal remedy: measure a teaspoon full (5mil), pour on jut boiled water, leave to cool to luke-warm (this will evaporate most of the alcohol). Take with food 3 times a day.

Weeks 6&7

Having followed a strict exclusion diet for a minimum of 2 weeks & you are symptom free, begin to re-introduce the eliminated foods.

When re-introducing a food, do it one food at a time and notice whether there is a recurrence of symptoms. Also take your resting pulse.

Eat a substantial amount of the re-introduced food & wait several hours. If there are no symptoms, eat some more, along with an ordinary meal such as you have been eating.

Take your resting pulse (sit still for 2 mins) before & several times during the first 90mins after eating the challenge food. A rise of 10bpm or more indicates an allergic response.

If there is no change in the pulse & no symptoms, it’s fairly safe to say that food is not an allergen.

You need to eliminate the yeast feeding foods for the whole 6 weeks-that’s alcohol, sugar, fermented products, mouldy foods, yeast containing foods.

Start with reintroducing the sweet vegetables at the beginning of week 6 (week 3 of the diet) one at a time and assess the effects they have. You can also start to reintroduce the “grey area” grains and legumes.

Alongside this, you will also be taking the probiotics, beginning at the start of week 6. Do NOT start taking the probiotics and reintroduce a food on the same day.

Read more about PROBIOTICS.

How to take the probiotics: We recommend that you take them as far away from taking your antifungal remedy as possible, as some of the herbs in the antifungal remedy have an antibiotic effect also. Although herbal antibiotics work to normalise the bacterial colonies rather than an indiscriminate cull, we want to give our soil based probiotics the best chance of repopulating the gut possible. When you start taking the probiotics, there is possibility of a herxheimer reaction. In our experience, nobody has had severe symptoms, just mild headaches and slight insomnia. If you do experience a skin reaction however, there are homeopathic remedies available to combat it.

During this as time, as with the whole 6 weeks of the diet, we will be taking raw garlic, ideally 3 cloves a day. Continue with permitted pancreatic tonic foods.

Weeks 8&9

Provided that you are symptom free and that vegetables, grains and legumes have been reintroduced successfully, you can go ahead and start to reintroduce prohibited fruit. Continue with garlic, probiotics and pancreatic support foods.

Weeks 9, 10 & 11

In week 9 (the last week of the diet), begin taking mucus membrane tonic tea that reduces any inflammation and heals the tight junctions in the mucus membrane gut lining.

After week 9, any other prohibited foods can be re introduced gradually and their effect assessed. At this stage, the health of the colon microbiome can be supported ongoingly with fermented foods which naturally contain healthy bacteria found in the colon, and prebiotics food to feed the colonic bacteria population:

  • Sprouted pulses, beans, and seeds

  • Sour croute

  • Kim chi

  • Kombucha

  • Miso

  • Unpasteurised dairy

  • Seaweed

  • Dandelion greens
